Rose Parade to see 'unprecedented' amount of security

Five planes flew over the annual Rose Parade in Pasadena, California, on Friday writing messages in the sky that included “America is great!”

Yahoo News reports that more than two dozen federal agencies are joining forces with the police to bring a huge level of security to the Rose Parade.

“Recent events at home and overseas have put added attention on the safety efforts at the annual Rose Parade and Rose Bowl game”, said Pasadena Assistant City Manager Steve Mermell. The Latin Times states that the Grand Marshal of the Rose Parade 2016 will be Ken Burns, an award-winning filmmaker who has produced and directed many documentaries about the history of the United States.

Authorities said the parade would be held under unprecedented security, although there were no known threats. The parade, this year a partnership between the Tournament of Roses and the National Park Service, will focus on the “Find Your Adventure” theme.

“I’ve never been to the parade in person, so this will be a new adventure for me”, Burns said in November when his selection was announced.

“That’s something new for the parade, but we feel it’s the prudent thing to do given Paris, San Bernardino, Mali”, Sanchez said.

The parade features 44 float entries, as well as 20 marching bands. “The Bachelor” television series entered a float depicting a romantic date on an exotic beach.

According to Mark Selby, deputy special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in Los Angeles and the federal coordinator for the Rose Parade and Bowl security, security plans involved “an unprecedented volume of resources and technologies”.
